Default LTA raises fines for illegal parking

A motorist caught parking a light vehicle along unbroken double yellow lines will be fined S$110, instead of S$70, if this is the second Notice of Traffic Offence he has been issued within 12 months.

INGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced higher fines for repeat offenders for illegal parking. Starting from Jan 1, 2015, it will introduce a tiered fines regime, such that motorists who receive their second Notice of Traffic Offence (NTO) within 12 months will have to pay a higher tier of fines.

A motorist caught parking a light vehicle along unbroken double yellow lines will be fined S$110, instead of S$70, if this is the second NTO he has been issued within 12 months.

The number of demerit points, which are meted out for more serious illegal parking offences, will remain unchanged, said LTA. NTOs issued prior to Jan 1, 2015 will not be taken into consideration when applying the tiered fines regime.

This is the first adjustment to illegal parking fines in two decades. LTA said that about half of all illegal parking traffic notices issued between 2011 and 2014 were committed by repeat offenders and this latest revision is to reduce the number of repeat offenders and hence the number of illegal parking offences.

I just saw a sign that from where I was gave notice of $1000 maximum fine to cyclists who goes against some rules in HDB estates. I was too far to read what were the rules and regulations but the $1000 maximum fine could be seen clearly.

Default CCTV cameras at 40 more locations

emiliatankn@mediacorp.com.sg
Published: 4:03 AM, December 23, 2014

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be installed at another 40 locations to deter illegal parking on a 24-hour basis, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced yesterday.

It said the installation of CCTV cameras at 30 locations earlier this year had resulted in significantly smoother traffic.

The previous 30 locations, which included
  • Collyer Quay,
  • River Valley Road and
  • Jalan Besar,
were chosen for their high incidence of illegal parking. Other considerations included the safety of pedestrians and road users, and the incidence of chronic traffic congestion. Areas with high pedestrian activity such as the CBD and proximity to popular malls, amenities and eateries were also factors taken into consideration.

Dr Chin Kian Keong, the LTA’s group director for transportation and road operations, said: “Besides improving traffic flow for cars and other road users, our bus commuters have also benefited from smoother traffic along these roads.”

Some of the new locations where the 40 CCTV cameras will be installed include
  • Beach Road (from Purvis Street junction to Middle Road),
  • Grange Road (between Mandarin Gallery and Cineleisure),
  • Rochor Road (in front of Fu Lu Shou complex) and
  • Serangoon Road (in front of The Verge shopping mall).
