try to take some reading of the water parameter (ammonia, nitrite, ph, temp.) as well. to minizie the further losses...

cycling for 1wk seems a little short for a tanksize such as urs. did u measure other water parameters such as pH, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates? IMHO, it might very well be ur water quality. big fish does not mean they can withstand all sorts of water.
my hypothesis:
1) the last gar may have been struggling in ur tank and finally succumb.
2) the death of the 3 gars fouled the tankwater causing ur last gar to pass on.
how long was the gar in ur tank before it died?

first of all, do u know ur own tank's pH? since u went for a sump tank setup, im assuming ur going to get more fishes in future. in this case, pls invest in a pH meter if u dun alry have one.

ur question simply means how to acclimatise new fishes before introducing them into ur tank. step by step procedure which i use:
1) untie ur bag, drain off a little of the water which is inside
2) add in some amount of ur own tank water. typically i will mix about 50% other tank, 50% my own tank water.
3) float the bags (with the fishes still inside) for about 30min-1hr in ur tank.
4) release the fishes if they look ok.

hope this helps
