Sirul Azhar Umar live interview called off after 45 minutes of waiting
Details Created On Monday, 23 February 2015 09:30 Published Date Written By The Rakyat Times Team

Rakyat Times broadcasted the 'live' interview intended between convicted murderer Sirul Azhar Umar and members of the media at the Pas headquarters at Jalan Raja Laut, Kuala Lumpur.

Unfortunately, the interview which was organised by Pas Information Chief Mahfuz Omar ended after 45 minutes with Mahfuz still unable to get Sirul on the phone.

While attempting to contact Sirul on the phone, Mahfuz answered questions from members of the local and international media. Mahfuz reiterated that he did not influence Sirul one way or the other, and had organised the teleconference session to allow all members of the press to communicate with the convicted murderer.

Mahfuz also called Police Inspector-General Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar a “Lance Corporal” for doubting the veracity of Sirul’s claims, due to Sirul's purportedly not revealing anything during the trial. Mahfuz called these remarks “shameful” because Khalid did not check his facts. Sirul had previously claimed in 2009 that he was being made “a scapegoat".

PressHe added that Khalid’s excuse of there not being enough evidence to open a police investigation was also erroneous, since it is during investigations that evidence is usually obtained.

When asked how Sirul could have access to a phone, Mahfuz said that the convicted murderer was not a police detainee but rather an immigration detainee. Mahfuz waved away another question posed - whether the teleconference was a distraction from the infighting in Pas.

Another reporter joked that Mahfuz should try a different network provider.

All of the calls made by the Pokok Sena MP to Sirul did not go through.

After 45 minutes, Mahfuz called the teleconference to an end. He said that he would accompany Sirul’s mother to Sydney next week to visit her son.

--------------------------------------
He suddenly said he will hold back for now hor.

He may be there in Australia, and the 'higher authority' couldn't quite touch him. But don't forget he should have family back in Malaysia... that can be touch.

Jailed Malaysian opposition leader's family seeks royal pardon

POSTED:*24 Feb 2015 22:40

KUALA LUMPUR: The family of jailed Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said on Tuesday they had filed for a royal pardon two weeks after the 67-year-old former deputy prime minister was sent back to jail for five years.

Malaysia's highest court on Feb. 10 rejected an appeal by the politician, who long posed the greatest threat to the long-ruling coalition, against a sodomy conviction, upholding a five-year prison term.

Anwar, the ruling party's rising star in the mid-1990s before he fell out with then Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, denied the charge that led to his second conviction for sodomy as a fabrication aimed at ending his political career.

He had 14 days, up to Tuesday, to file for a pardon with Malaysia's monarch.

"Through this petition we have presented all the facts and scenarios for a fair consideration to be thoroughly scrutinized," Nurul Nuha Anwar, the second daughter of Anwar said in a statement issued to the media.

"Our father is innocent and was tyrannized when he was convicted with a politically characterized accusation and sentenced to five years prison. Therefore our father is a political prisoner."

Anwar's family and political party have voiced concern about his health and conditions in prison.

"Anwar suffers from a long-term back and spine condition. The conditions he is being held in are aggravating his spine and back condition and may pose a grave threat to his health," Anwar's party said in a statement last week.

One of his lawyers, N. Surendran, told Reuters Anwar's family was only allowed to visit him once a month and he was not allowed to make phone calls.

Anwar was head of a three-party opposition alliance that made stunning gains in the 2013 election which for the first time raised the possibility of a genuine challenge for the coalition that has ruled Malaysia since independence in 1957.

Critics tear their hair over Malaysia PM's wife

KUALA LUMPUR: The wife of Malaysia's prime minister, who is widely mocked over reports of her taste for luxury, drew fresh scorn on Tuesday (Feb 24) after she complained about the rising cost of house calls from hairdressers and tailors.

Rosmah Mansor, 63, is a controversial figure in Malaysia, where she is routinely portrayed by critics as out of touch with ordinary citizens struggling to make ends meet. The wife of Prime Minister Najib Razak handed her critics new fuel with comments on Monday lamenting the 1,200 ringgit (US$330) she has to spend on house calls by stylists to dye her substantial head of hair, and 500 ringgit for tailored dresses.

"We have to make beautiful clothes to attend functions, but the prices are way too high. For those who can afford, it's all right. But what about housewives like us, with no income?" she was quoted as saying by the Malaysian Insider news portal.

Malaysia's minimum wage is 900 ringgit per month. Rosmah made the comments at a public event to discuss the introduction of a new consumer tax in April.*

"Is this woman for real? Some families have to live on what she pays to have her hair dyed," said one Facebook user, among a flood of social media postings poking fun at her on Tuesday. Said a post on Twitter: "I hope to become a poor housewife of a civil servant just like you Rosmah."

Since her husband took office in 2009, Rosmah has faced periodic criticism over reports of luxury overseas shopping sprees. The New York Times ran a report earlier this month detailing purchases of high-end US real estate by people close to Najib, and said it also had obtained documents showing millions of dollars in jewellery purchases for Rosmah.

In a statement to AFP after the New York Times report, the prime minister's office said "We prefer not to comment on unsourced speculation concerning the private finances and spending of the prime minister and his family."

Malaysian police on Feb 14 seized a shipment of books lampooning Najib and Rosmah by one of the country's best-known political cartoonists. Last year an opposition lawmaker was charged with sedition for producing a satirical video that included a character widely viewed as representing Rosmah.

Malaysia's UMNO to stay out of Kelantan's Chempaka by-election
By Melissa Goh, Malaysia Bureau Chief, Channel NewsAsia
POSTED: 26 Feb 2015 18:18

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's ruling party UMNO is staying out of a by-election next month in the opposition-controlled state of Kelantan in a move widely seen by many as UMNO's attempt to woo the state's Islamist party PAS.

The Chempaka state seat fell vacant after the death of former chief minister and PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat.

Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak says one of the reasons his ruling party UMNO will not contest the Mar 22 by-elections in Chempaka is because the government still needs to focus on rebuilding the state.

Kelantan, in northeastern Malaysia, was hit by one of the country’s worst floods in decades, late last year. Some 300,000 people were displaced when the deluge damaged their homes and businesses.

Najib, speaking after having chaired Wednesday (Feb 25) night's UMNO Supreme Council meeting, said the government's priority is to help flood victims return to their lives.

The Prime Minister said that another reason not to contest is for the sake of the unity of ummah, or the Muslim community, despite their political differences with opposition Islamist party PAS.

PAS has ruled Kelantan since it won the elections in 1990. More than 90 per cent of the state's population is Muslim. "We need to work on efforts to unite the Muslim community,” said Najib. “Although there are political differences, we must prioritise on Muslim unity."

The move is seen as UMNO's attempt to woo PAS to restart talks on forming a unity government. UMNO's Secretary General Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has made no pretence of the Party's intention. "There are some talks on unity,” he said. “We will talk to them; it's okay."

It is widely expected that PAS will nominate Nik Abduh Nik Mat, Nik Aziz's son, to stand in the Chempaka by-election. Nik Abduh who is also Pasir Mas MP, wants to continue his father's legacy. His father Nik Aziz, who was a revered spiritual leader and Kelantan’s longest-serving chief minister, died earlier in February at the age of 84.

“My father's wish was for all of his children to continue with his struggle to uphold Islam in Malaysia," said Nik Abduh.

The late Nik Aziz advocated the three-party opposition Pakatan alliance and was against any talks of unity with UMNO.

“They will stick to their words,” said Wan Abdul Halim Ismail, vice-chairman of Kelantan Association of NGOs. “You don't think that only (Nik Aziz) will object the unity with UMNO, but a very strong majority will object a unity with UMNO."

With the opposition alliance facing a possible leadership crisis, especially with the passing of Nik Aziz and their de facto chief Anwar Ibrahim behind bars, analysts say the by-election in Chempaka does present an opportunity time for UMNO to get close to PAS once again in the name of ummah or Muslim unity, in a bid to drive a wedge between the Islamic party and the Chinese-based Democratic Action Party.

Rafizi: “I have declared my assets, when will Najib?”

SHAH ALAM, 10 Mar: The PKR Secretary-General, Rafizi Ramli, today announced that he has made a statutory declaration (SD) to declare his assets, income and expenses in detail following the previous challenge from Umno leaders.

He said that the statutory declaration shows the relevant background on his income and position as a Member of Parliament, including before joining the political arena and becoming an elected representative.

5.1

He said that the details are also accompanied by documentary evidence consisting of bank statements, savings and it is displayed openly on his personal blog and social networking site for the public’s information.

“I believe that if I, someone who does not hold any government position and do not have power, can declare my assets, then it is a moral responsibility and trust for each Cabinet Minister, right up to the Prime Minister, to also declare assets, debts, income and also expenditure.

“I advise Datuk Seri Najib Razak to use this method to clear his name which is being associated with luxuries that are not compatible with his salary.

5.2

“If indeed he inherited a lot from the late Tun Abdul Razak, as in the Prime Minister’s Office statement, then he needs to detail the inheritance as I have,” he said.

Rafizi, who is also the PKR Vice-President, said that he is confident that the move to declare assets, as he has done, will gain full support from the people.

Rafizi declared his assets, income and expenses in detail following a challenge from the Cheras Division Umno Chief, Datuk Seri Syed Ali Alhabshee, to do so.

Syed Ali challenged Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders to declare their assets before criticising Najib’s wealth and other Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders.

-----------------------------

Same as in Singapore. I'm sure I'm not alone to want the MPs, Ministers and PM/President to declare theirs and their family's wealth, before office, during office (or current) and upon leaving office!

PKR’s Rafizi reveals RM1.6m net worth
PUBLISHED: MARCH 10, 2015 02:20 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 — PKR MP Rafizi Ramli revealed today a net worth totaling about RM1.6 million, after accepting an Umno division chief’s challenge to opposition lawmakers to declare their assets.

The Pandan MP said in a statutory declaration that his assets amount to RM1,960,344 while his debt totals RM395,937, resulting in a net worth of RM1,564,407, as of December 31 last year.

“Almost all of my salary and allowances as MP is spent every month on the salaries of my service centre employees and on contributions to my party (in the form of fixed monthly cuts and rental for the Keadilan offices,” said Rafizi in the statutory declaration attached with supporting documents that was sent to the press.

He said he receives a nett monthly income of RM11,710 as MP, out of which RM10,100 goes to PKR and his service centre.

The opposition lawmaker also said he uses the savings profit from his Amanah Saham Bumiputra and Tabung Haji accounts of about RM4,000 monthly, his savings, as well as his “irregular” consultancy work with international corporations in business and finance, to support his monthly expenditure.

“Generally, I get about US$1,500 (RM5,500) from international companies for each report as a consultant,” said Rafizi.

Rafizi, a PKR vice-president who formerly used to work in management in state oil giant Petronas and pharmaceutical company Pharmaniaga, said he has cash savings totaling RM1,336,908, while his life and health insurance policy and share in Boustead Holdings amount to RM30,436.

He said he has a 1,400 square foot condominium in Bukit Antarabangsa worth RM322,000, as well as three Honda cars, resulting in a total worth of RM593,000 for his property and vehicles.

His debt of RM395,937 is from the remainder of his housing loan, personal loan, car loans for the Honda Accord car loan and Honda CRV, and credit card debt.

Rafizi revealed that the servicing of his various loans, vehicles, and contributions to his parents and wife amount to RM11,900 monthly, while his utility bills and other expenses total RM2,260 a month.

News portal Malaysiakini reported Cheras Umno division chief Datuk Seri Syed Ali Alhabshee as saying recently that Pakatan Rakyat lawmakers should declare their assets before questioning Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s wealth.

“I advise Datuk Seri Najib Razak to use this method to clear his name for allegedly having wealth that exceeds his salary,” said Rafizi today.

“If it’s true that he inherited plenty of assets from the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, as per the Prime Minister’s Office’s statement, then he must detail each of those inherited assets as how I detailed my assets,” he added.

-------------------------------

Swee la! Come clean lo all politicians. Bet Najib won't be able to. Neither will Singapore's politicians.
