I would like to reflute on that... Biological filtration is as important as mechanical filtration. While mechanical filter will stop all debris in water, biological filtration is the one that acutally clean the water in microscorpic level. Most planted tank with crystal clear water are result of biological filtration either in cannister or internal filter with multiple layers of filter medium. The last layer is usually ceramic ring or ball with lots of tiny pore for micro organism to live in. They are the one that treat the water as it pass through.
