Thumbs down Minister Koh Poh Koon: Sell your HDB and rent if you are poor, HDB is not a bank

In his Parliamentary response to queries about helping Singaporeans who could not afford to pay mortgage payment, first-time Minister of State for National Development Koh Poh Koon advised that Singaporeans who are poor should sell their HDB flat and rent, and that the HDB is not a bank that offers financial assistance.

PAP MP Joan Pereira was asking the government what kind of mortgage assistance HDB provides to the retrenched, particularly those in their late 40s and 50s. Minister Koh Poh Koon responded:

“For those who face longer-term hardship… Right-sizing to a flat within their means is also an option. For low income households who are unable to afford another flat, have no family support and no other housing options, HDB may offer them a public rental flat.

The Housing Board is not a bank and is unable to offer personal loans.”

Minister Koh said those who need help can get financial counselling and referrals to social support agencies for job placements and financial aid.

Actually in full context he is not sala wad. HDB cannot issue personal loan wad..... HDB will assist them by referring them to agencies and help them restructure the loan.

Indranee also 1 kind - ask him if HDB will give financial help to HDB owners who take loan from Bank.

But hor.. i can see... he's not prepared for the debate la. Even script he also not very familiar

It is not about he sala or not in that loan part. It is his aloof and couldn't care less attitude.

Makes the first 2 PMs very stupid in wanting all Singaporeans to own their own homes. Makes LHL, Tharman both very stupid when they first came up with $1k monthly income can own their own home.

I think more like he is not prepared at all la.
See the way he's ruffling through the papers.. i think he's still not familiar with how HDB works and the policies.

All questions are not thrown on the fly but given to them before hand so they can go do their necessary preparation and their staff prepares the answers.
These MPs/Ministers mainly read thru what has been prepared and understand so they can answer it.

No excuses since it is not impromptu questions.

I doubt he even read through the "script" before presenting.
Judging from his expression, he himself cannot make head or tail out of wad he read out.
