Reds Reject Sturridge Bid

Liverpool have rejected an offer from Sevilla to take Daniel Sturridge on loan according to the Daily Mail.

Inter Milan are also rumoured to be interested, but with the Reds demanding a permanent deal, it now remains to be seen where the England international’s future lies.

Sevilla offered to pay all of Sturridge’s £150,000-a-week wages, but technical director Michael Edwards rejected the deal.

It’s been suggested the Reds are looking for a fee in the region of £20-30m for the forward, who is desperate to leave the club in order to enhance his World Cup chances that are looking increasingly slim.

It’s looking increasingly likely that Sturridge will leave Liverpool, but where will he end up?

Could a Premier League team take a punt on him staying fit and go all out with a sizeable bid?

If he could retain form and fitness- easier said than done I know- he would be an astute signing for any European side.

Juventus Confirm Can Interest

Giuseppe Marotta- Juventus’ general director- has admitted the Italian giants are going to do “all they can” to sign Emre Can.

“Emre Can is a player whose contract is running down,” Marotta stated.

Tell us something we don’t know, Giuseppe!

So it allows us to approach him for negotiations and that is the course we have taken.

I can’t say if he could sign a new contract with Liverpool, but I can say we will try all we can to get the player.

Obviously, we have to respect what the player wants.

Indeed they do, but what does Can want?

Juventus are being quite brazen in their intentions, and this could be one of Liverpool’s most significant transfer victories if they can keep the player.

Interesting times ahead, I reckon, as Juventus seem to be stepping up their pursuit and using the media to their advantage.

As Marotta admitted though, it will all come down to what Can wants, in the end.

Let’s hope he wants to stay in Red.

A Lot Has Changed

This is insane, really.

Although it would be interesting to see how the ratio of players still at Liverpool from four seasons ago stacks up against other top Premier League clubs.

Only Mignolet, Sturridge, Flanagan and Henderson remain from that Brendan Rodgers squad, and the first three of those names will most likely depart in the next two transfer windows.

Jurgen’s Liverpool revolution is in full swing!

Can vs. Henderson

Liverpool really will want to keep hold of Emre Can, who is outperforming his midfield partner Jordan Henderson in almost every department.

If Can stays, should Henderson be sacrificed?

Or does the skipper still have a future at Anfield?

Stats suggest losing Can would be a blow to Liverpool

Salah's Journey

There’s a remarkable article featured in The Football Times this week that looks at Mohamed Salah’s rise to Premier League super-stardom.

Just listen to this:

Salah was first playing for a club 30 minutes away from his village; that soon became 90 minutes, and eventually a whopping four-and-a-half-hour journey, five days a week, just to get to training.

He would spend just two hours at school, reaching training by 2pm. He had an official letter allowing him to do so. In essence, he had to sacrifice his education, but it was the cold-blooded drive to make it as a footballer that kept him going.

That is some cold-blooded determination from a young Mo right there.

He also has one coach in particular, Said El-Shishini, to thank after he converted Salah into a wide midfielder.

Can you believe the Egyptian was one a left-back?

In the under-16 Cairo League, Salah once had five one-on-one chances from left-back, but wasted them all due to the energy expended from charging down the flank.

His coach gave a crying Salah 25 Egyptian pounds, pushed him forward, and told him he would become the top goalscorer in both the under-16 local league as well as the under-17 Nationwide League. Thirty-five goals later, his coach’s belief was vindicated.

The whole article really is worth a read as it details Salah’s progression year-by-year- and looks into his miserable time at Chelsea- that have seen the Kop’s newest hero announce himself in rapid fashion to the Premier League.

To be fair, he deserves everything good that comes his way after that four-and-a-half-hour bus journey with several changes.

I avoid any public transport that means I have to change just once.

Good on you, Mo!

Sanchez, Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang - the transfer business Liverpool's rivals are conducting and what it means for Klopp

After a breakneck start to January, Liverpool’s transfer train has slowed down somewhat.

Virgil van Dijk arrived, Phiippe Coutinho departed. Those who expected a flurry of activity with the Reds armed with over £100million have been left disappointed.

Their attempts to bring Naby Keita to Merseyside six months early were rejected by RB Leipzig; interest in Thomas Lemar has cooled, and parked until the summer regardless.

As Liverpool start to decelerate, their top six rivals have picked up the baton. Chelsea have already conducted transfer business, while Manchester United and Arsenal are on the verge of a sensational swap deal.

Tottenham and Manchester City, however, remain unmoved – for now.

Here is how Liverpool’s rivals are shaping up in January, and what it means for the remainder of the campaign.

MANCHESTER CITY

What have they done so far? Nothing in terms of incomings, with a whole host of reserve players heading out elsewhere on loan. The biggest move, perhaps, is Colombian forward Marlos Moreno, who has moved to Brazilian side Flamengo.

What might they do? After missing out on Van Dijk, a centre back is desired by Pep Guardiola – especially with Vincent Kompany struggling so much with injuries. Jonny Evans is one name linked.

Midfielder Fred, of Shakhtar Donetsk, and Nice’s Jean Seri have also been mentioned as potential arrivals.

Should Liverpool be worried? City, unfortunately, remain an irrelevancy to Liverpool’s aspirations this season. Even after the stunning 4-3 win at the weekend, City remain 15 points clear of the Reds and will win the Premier League. No signing this month would do more than bolster their squad.

MANCHESTER UNITED

What have they done so far? Snatched Alexis Sanchez from under the noses of their city rivals, it seems. A direct swap deal with Arsenal, which will see Henrikh Mkhitaryan move the other way, is on course for completion.

What might they do? After Sanchez, surely little else. Inter Milan wide man Ivan Perisic was their main failed target in the summer, but the Chilean’s arrival should see interest in Perisic end. United have also been linked with Lucas Moura of PSG, as well as midfielder Seri, but it could be Sanchez and Sanchez only this month.

Should Liverpool be worried? There is no doubting Sanchez is a brilliant player, one who will improve Jose Mourinho’s forward options. He is available for the Champions League will increases their threat further. Sanchez moving to City would have been more beneficial to Liverpool, but it won’t make United untouchable.

CHELSEA

What have they done so far? Sealed a deal for Ross Barkley, four months after his deadline day u-turn saw him remain at Everton. His £15million move remains the only arrival, with no major outgoings.

What might they do? A move for Andy Carroll has been mooted as Antonio Conte looks to strengthen a forward line that has struggled in recent weeks. Left back is another position Conte seems keen to bolster, with Alex Sandro and Emerson – both from Serie A – linked.

Should Liverpool be worried? Not really. Carroll will perhaps give a more experienced option off the bench than Michy Batshuayi, but he won’t transform their fortunes completely. The pursuit of a left-sided full back also seems strange given Marcos Alonso’s performances.

TOTTENHAM

What have they done so far? Nothing in terms of incomings, with Georges-Kevin N’Koudou – 23 games in two years – heading to Burnley on loan.

What might they do? There has been little in terms of speculation, with Mauricio Pochettino seemingly happy with the make-up of his squad. Norwich youngster James Maddison is perhaps the strongest to be linked.

Should Liverpool be worried? No more than they are now. It would seem the Tottenham side of the first half of the campaign will be the same for the second. But is their squad strong enough?

ARSENAL

What have they done so far? By far the most active of the top six. The aforementioned swap deal with Manchester United will see Mkhitaryan join the Gunners, while they continue to be linked with Dortmund hotshot Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. They have already confirmed their first signing, Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, earlier in the window.

The Gunners have been quick to trim their squad too, with Theo Walcott and Francis Coquelin sold to Everton and Valencia respectively.

What might they do? Aside from Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang, Bordeaux winger Malcom is on their radar. The young Brazilian has been a star in Ligue 1 this season.

Should Liverpool be worried? Arsene Wenger’s side sit eight points adrift of Liverpool and are about to lose their best player. However, the introduction of Mkhitaryan and potentially Aubameyang – both former Klopp players – would help bridge that gap. They would possibly become a little more dangerous, but probably not enough to climb above the Reds.

Man City 'interested' in Emre Can - but could his future depend on Liverpool's Leon Goretzka chase?

Emre Can's future has taken another twist as Manchester City have reportedly expressed an interest in signing the Liverpool midfielder.

The 24-year-old is out of contract in the summer and has been strongly linked with a move abroad this month - with Juventus and Bayern Munich being touted as potential destinations.

However, the German international has recently not ruled out signing a new contract at Anfield and, according to the Mirror , any decision on his future could well depend on where Leon Goretzka moves to.

Bayern Munich are the front-runners to sign the Schalke midfielder, who is also out of contract in the summer, ahead of Liverpool.

However, the Bundesliga giants are reportedly unlikely to bring in more than one midfielder, meaning that Can's options would be opened up if Goretzka chose to move to the Allianz Arena.

The Mirror claims that has given Man City hope that the can tempt the 24-year-old to the Etihad, whilst it is also claimed that Arsenal could express an interest in brining the German international in.

However, Juventus are still interested in a move for the Liverpool man - with club CEO Beppe Marotta claiming the Serie A giants will do all they can to sign the midfielder.

Marotta said: "Emre Can is a player whose contract is running down.

“So it allows us to approach him for negotiations and that is the course we have taken.

"I can't say if he could sign a new contract with Liverpool, but I can say we will try all we can to get the player."

Goretzka Confirmed

Schalke have confirmed Leon Goretzka has joined Bayern.

[Goretzka] has signed a contract from the 1.7.2018 with the [Bayern]. We did everything possible to keep Leon.... In the summer, there was an agreement with him and his advisers. Still, he wanted time to wait for the sports development.

We have noted this with regret. Yesterday, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has informed us that Leon has passed the medical check. We’re losing a very, very good player

Default LFC fitness latest: Salah, Van Dijk, Lovren and Klavan

Jürgen Klopp is hopeful Mohamed Salah and Ragnar Klavan will return to training today following illness, but Liverpool will need to check on the condition of Dejan Lovren.

The trio missed Thursday’s double session at Melwood due to sickness, though Virgil van Dijk was involved once again after missing Sunday’s victory over Manchester City due to a hamstring complaint.

Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “Virgil was back yesterday and completely fine. We have a few problems with players feeling ill or unwell.

“Raggy was out, but hopefully back today. Dejan was out. Mo Salah was out, but hopefully back today.

“Mo and Raggy are on the good side of it already, but with Dejan we are not 100 per cent sure [if he will be back today].”
