Default How Liverpool's Marko Grujic is 'toughening up' during loan spell with Cardiff City

Marko Grujic's loan spell at Cardiff has "toughened him up" according to Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock.

The Liverpool midfielder has been sent out to the Championship promotion-chasers in a bid to gain first-team football experience. Grujic made just six appearances for the Reds this season, but has already started three games at Cardiff - including an FA Cup tie against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is a fan of the 21-year-old, though the feeling at Melwood is that he needs to smooth out the rough edges in his game if he is to have a long-term future at Anfield. Defensive awareness, positional discipline and consistency are just three areas Grujic has been encouraged to work on specifically.

Warnock, though, says he is already seeing signs of progress from the former Red Star Belgrade man, who is expected to start once more when Cardiff travel to Millwall on Friday night.

“He’s catching up and he’s getting better” said Warnock.

“It’s difficult for him to be flung straight in, with the second game being Manchester City.

“I think it’s toughened him up being with us. When he first came into training, he left a little bit to be desired should we say.

“But you soon get into it with us – when you train as hard as we do, you want to be like that.

“And I think it’s improved his game. The minimum requirement is effort because when you have ability like he has, it comes through on top. I think he’s realised that early doors and wants to stay in the team.

“He wants to play and wants to go to the World Cup. He’s in the window and has got 17 games to show it.

“I won’t play him if he doesn’t deserve to be in the team – I keep reading I’ve got to play him but all it is is that he have to pay more money if I don’t. The club agreed to that so it’s not my worry.”

Grujic has been booked in two of his three appearances for his new club - no surprise to anyone who has witnessed his rather enthusiastic tackling style at Liverpool over the past 12 months.

But despite a comfortable defeat at the hands of City, Cardiff have benefited from the youngster's tenacity and physical attributes - particularly when winning 4-1 at Leeds last time out.

“In every game he’s stuttered at times and then regained his composure, but I think he’s learning about what we want him to do,” Warnock added.

“He can play different roles and we’re trying teach him those roles. He’s such a great lad and great athlete as well.

“Second-half last week he made some wonderful headers, so it’s not just his creativity, although he can spot a pass, which is great for us.

“But with the pace of the Championship, he has to get involved quickly because if you have too many touches you’ve lost it and you’re under the cosh. He’s learning and he’ll be better.”

Default Klopp: We have to manage Hendo for Saints and Porto

Jürgen Klopp would prefer not to start Jordan Henderson against both Southampton and FC Porto as the Liverpool captain regains full fitness after a hamstring injury.

The midfielder was in the manager’s XI for only the second time since December 22 last weekend, when the Reds played out a 2-2 Premier League draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

Next up is a trip to St Mary’s on Sunday, which comes just three days before the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Portugal.

Given Henderson’s limited game time during the past seven weeks, Klopp would rather not call on his skipper to begin both matches if possible.

“I don’t think that would make too much sense but if we have to do it then we have to do it,” the boss explained ahead of the journey to the south coast.

“It depends on all the other players. Jordan can always dig in and his attitude is outstanding, so of course he could.

“That is the only thing we have to plan around but that is because he had an injury, like we do now with Adam [Lallana]. When can we bring him again?

“In a normal situation it is no problem but in this specific situation after injury it would not be perfect.”

Default Southampton v Liverpool: Team news

Jürgen Klopp has been handed a triple injury boost ahead of Liverpool's trip to Southampton, with Adam Lallana, Ragnar Klavan and Alberto Moreno set to be fit enough to feature.

Lallana has been absent since sustaining a muscle injury during last month's 1-0 defeat to Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.

But, at his pre-match press conference, Klopp said of the attacker: "He is for sure an option for the squad, but an option for the first XI?

"I would think not in the moment, but maybe I can sleep twice before we play Southampton so maybe I will change my mind on this. We will see."

Klavan, meanwhile, has returned to training after a thigh strain, while Moreno is also in contention having overcome a small setback in his recovery from an ankle issue.

Jordan Henderson is unlikely to start both of the next two games, at St Mary's and the subsequent Champions League tie against FC Porto.

"I don't think that would make too much sense," Klopp said of the captain, who is regaining full fitness after more than a month out with a hamstring injury.

One man who will not be part of the Reds' squad on the south coast, however, is Joe Gomez.

The defender was running at Melwood on Friday, but the boss explained: "I don't think he has a chance for Sunday if they don't come in and say the running was that good!

"Porto, there's a chance. We will see."

As for the hosts, their sole injury concern is striker Charlie Austin, who will definitely miss out with a hamstring problem.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino said: "We have nothing to report in terms of injuries, which is good but we will wait until tomorrow.

"There is just Charlie at the moment who is outside of the squad but the rest of the team are ready."

1-0 Newcastle!

This would be a stunning result for the Reds in their hunt for second place!

Hendo Absence Explained

Jurgen Klopp has explained why Jordan Henderson is missing from Liverpool’s starting line-up today- and he reckons Wednesday’s trip to Porto has came into his thinking.

“He’s not injured but he gets a rest, I decided. He can do it today,” the manager said.

It was hard to decide but it gives him the opportunity to make a real session instead of sitting on the bench today, because of the situation with Emre on Wednesday, that’s the truth.

Klopp added: “We don’t think too much about the last game because it’s all about the next game – what we need, who is fit enough, who can start, sometimes who made a good performance when we brought them off the bench.

“It’s no different in this moment. It was all about thinking how we can beat Southampton, which will be difficult. That’s the choice we made.”
