Driftwood and water.
Will your DW cause water to become brown?
Is it inevitable? is there a way to eliminate the problem? |

hmm yes it will make water brown. as for whether it is inevitable, to me it is. can lower the intenisty of leeching of tanin by soaking in hot water, sunning....but somehow mine still like that lar. hahah dun worry more pros will come to comment on this. at the mean time maybe u can do some search in the forums.

Bro, my advise is similar. What i do is boil it in hot water for about 1 hr+ then soak it overnight in declorinated or geoliquid added water. I feel the geo liquid really does help but declorinated water should be fine as well. Anyway, after doing this and adding it to my tank, my water did not turn brownish.
Hope this helps |

It is just about soaking. After a period of time the tannins will be totally leeched from the wood and it will stop coloring the water.
Just put it in a pail of boiling water for a couple of days and change the water until it is not so brown. If your tank is newly setup, you might consider getting some activated carbon to prevent the coloring for a week or so, but I will advise against it. AC tends to soak up other elements needed by your plants as well. Tannin occurs naturally in the waters and it does some good for the fishes. -Calvin |

If you want it fast, can try scrubbing the sides using a small brush.

just put the dw in your tank and live with it for a few months and the brown color will go away. That what I did, no choice.

my two pleco tanks with driftwood in them has got a constant brown tinge to the water... i think the tanin is good for the fishes and lowers the ph slightly.. makes the tank looks interesting anyway in my taste.. but for planted might not be a good idea cos the color might block out some of the light.. waste..

i think soaking it in hot water is still the best way. scrubbing it.. might not be good, your DW might get smaller and smaller. depends on the quality of the DW too. and the colour of the DW affects the pH of the water? i'm not sure about that.. never heard of that before.
