Hi BS93,

welcome to AF.

its a bit hard to explain how much and wat u need. there are some things that are essential, and some are just optional.

read thru some of our threads on the setting up of platned tanks and you can definitely learn alot. if there's specifically anything u don't understand then u can raise ur questions here. the veterans in planten are more than glad to assist u. Try not to ask questions that are too general. Nott ppl don't wan to answer you. Just that ppl don't know wat to answer you.

enjoy ur new hobby.

since u're looking at planted tanks, i guess the focus would be more of flora than fauna. u can focus on getting the plants necessities like light, CO2 cannister, base and liquid fert, fan etc. also u can add a ext. cannister filter for water circulation and better water quality.

when ur tank is more or less matured and settled after 2 week plus, then u introduce fishes inside.

if u're looking at budget wise, co2 u can choose not to get at all, depending on the plant requirements. or if u want to try try, get the DIY CO2 which costs only $28 for whole set, or get 2nd hand empty bottles and get the reaction mixture(yeast, sugar, baking soda...) in NTUC can liao.

for lights, it's basically 3wpg, although it can vary according to tank depth and intensity.

fan is to cool the tank to allow better growth of plants esp moss.

fert like base fert are nourishments for rooted plants. in the case of moss or java ferns, adding liquid fert is better as they can also absorb more effectively this way.

gravel u can just use lapis or if u want get something better use ADA soil. check out the forums for more info about these substrate...

pay a visit to NA or colourful aquarium and talk with the uncle there they will help u mroe or less.
