Default Handspawning: Sarabat Style

Good thread started by Bro Butler and chris. Would be good resource for the sarabat bros. Do feel free to add information and sharing. Cheers!!

From bro Butler:

From bro chris:
This is handjob for rubba the goldfish. 1 female and 3 males are used in this video. The bigger pc is the female whereby the eggs are rubba out and followed by the 3 males for their milt.

From bro kitsilano:
I think it is good that a simple video can generate so much interest on breeding especially hand spawning. I been surfing the net for articles on goldfish spawning and I think this article below is so far the most comprehensive and applicable in the Sg context as the article is by a Thai brethren......Thai and Singapore climatical condition about the same.

http://www.petsfanatics.com/forum/t4...technique.html

In there this caption give a good idea on the basic of breeding ranchu....

"Ranchus spawn when there’s a change in temperature (colder) such as the entering of autumn or winter. Ranchu spawn once a year in area with severe cold weather and more in warmer climate. In Thailand, ranchu spawn twice a year on average, during monsoon (July-September) and winter (November-January). However, we do have several breeding pairs that give 4-6 broods per year. At Absolute Ranchu we do not breed fish that is smaller than 13cms, since those fish will not produce good quality eggs. Young ranchus (under 1 year old) are capable of spawning, as well, but the offsprings are usually of inferior qualities with mixed size. Older ranchus will give offspring that grow uniformly in size and qualities.

Natural Spawning: You will need to have one female, two males and a pond of about 1mX1mX40cms with ropes tied up in bunch in the middle of the pond to catch the eggs. The pond should also have an adjustable air pump or valve; this is to control the amount of air in the pond at different stages. The pond should also have an overflow system, thus the cleaning of the top water is possible.

When the female is ready to spawn, their stomach will become noticeably bigger. The stomach will bulge out sideways, and when you lightly touch the bottom of the stomach, the stomach will feel soft and seems to be filled with liquid. Ranchu’ stomach is usually hard. As the female gets closer to spawning the color of the ass will turn from white to pink or red and the ass will stick out noticeably. This is the surest way of checking if the female is ready. (Some fish, the stomach will get soft too, right after they have just eaten.) For the female, we usually do not do anything special, in preparation for breeding. we just stop feeding her any color enhancing food and increase more live feeds.

For the male, which should not usually be kept with the female, we have to be sure that they are also ready for the spawning. You need two males that are ready for this. We usually keep the males rather skinny, since this is the only way to be sure that they will produce enough sperms for breeding. Males usually produce small amount of sperms therefore, two males are needed for the most efficient breeding. When the male is ready, you will clearly see a number of white dots that appear on their swimming fins. If the male do not have these spots, then they are not ready."

Default Preventing egg congestion (spawn binding)

Another way of applying the handspawning technique (apart from breeding), is to prevent egg congestion in your female fish. Congested eggs will lead to spawn binding is a very deadly ailment which can kill your female fish if their eggs are not able to release. I lost 1 of my favourite ranchu to this before.

Below is a video on applying the 'rubbing' technique on how to get her to release her eggs. I'm using my white ranchu after noticing she's been chased around by the males, a day after I did a major WC.

Apologies if the video or my demonstration wasn't too clear. The eggs should ooze out quickly. Noticed from the video the eggs been released and floating around in the tank? This is what I got in the end.

My advice is: Make sure your female fish has eggs first. You can tell from their abnormally huge or sagging tummy. Just a gentle rub and do not squeeze her tummy or else you won't know what else will come out! Please go easy on your fish and don't overdo it. The fish will be stressed out. Return her to the community tank once it's over.

I think most important is to have some healthy breeding pairs. Yes in the process of "wet" spawning might loose some to not being fertilised, but its negligible. The other method is dry spawning where you take the female out from the water and handspawn her onto a plate and den handspawn the male onto the same plate and den mix the solution and introduce the whole thing into the water.

This method is known to be able to fertilise 100% or near to 100% of the eggs.

Very useful sharing. But the abovementioned method is not for the novice as the fish can be easily killed in the process. However how else can one gain experience if not from trying
