This is what I observe. The koi are calm and active, water is clear and bright, a thin layer of green algae growing on the glass look nice. When bentonite is added, water becomes cloudy but the koi are not bothered by it and they still eat when I feed them. So this tells me, it is safe to use bentonite. I only use it for 3 weeks, it is early to tell whether there is a long term benefit or harm.

My sump tank is large, I use cotton wools in the 1st compartment and I clean them regularly, I also do 20% water change twice a week. Mayb all these help too.

Refresh Powder is an established brand but it is expensive and one pack is too much for me. So I turn to raw bentonite as a cheap alternative.

so after the cloudiness, the water became clearer and brighter than before ?
how much actually is the refresh powder? what size does it come ?
Maybe some bros are willing to share and chip in money to buy in bulk so that we can divide into smaller size ?

Yes, completely clear up overnight and water clearer and brighter.

I think Refresh Powder is sold in 5kg pack. Saw it at Summer Koi, could be $100 or more, can't remember.

Monmorillonite clay is also known as calcium bentonite, which is odorless cat litter. Cheaper, by the way.

Don't use cat litter to be put into your koi pond. I found this thread in koi-bito discussing about montmorillonite clay. Read post #5 the last paragraph about using cat litter as substitute.

Went to Diamond Koi and Nippon koi during weekends.

Refresh powder, Japan brand, is S$110 for 5kg at Diamond. I didn't see it, I asked.
Super powder, Japan imported, I call it Ah Seng Brand , is S$20 for 2kg.

When my raw bentonite runs out, I will switch to Super Powder since it costs the same and Ah Seng has tested and uses it extensively in his farm.
