This is an example of mooning on the Burundi variant. See the white patch on the black band? Most often caused by inbreeding. |

We used to call in white spots, more prevalent with the burundi variant. There is nothing wrong with the fish, just that they don't look as nice.

In some case, the mooning does disappear when the fish gets bigger, but most of the time it stays with the fish.

many german and usa breeders have beautiful F0 parents but end up with severe F1 mooning fries. no one really knows why. some believe it occurs very often in captive bred F1. some believe that this is not genetic because the some batch of 40-50fries have a good mix of mooning and non-mooning fries [same arguement for those who believe that the mooning ones are bad genes] by the way, mooning is not considered a defect. just unsightly... two unrelated F1 with severe mooning may/may not produce offsprings with mooning. |

Wow...insightful....thanks. So mooning is really a myth? Ya I don't consider them a defect, unlike crossed bars....but yep, very much prefer my fronts to have full barrings.
