Betta fin trimming
This is more of a discussion for the bros here, what do you all think of fin trimming? Personally I think fins are not like human hair where we can cut if we think it's not nice and we should not do it unless it helps the fish in some way.
I took this from another website: (IBC's response to a DVD on fin trimming) The Judging Board of the IBC does not condone the practice of trimming or altering the appearance of fish in order to meet the standard in any way. It is for this reason we have concerns that although we understand your intent to inform and educate on how to possibly determine if a fish has been altered; there is also the possibility that this DVD could be a teaching tool for those who would continue to perform the practice. The IBC Show Circuit has always and will continue to be about breeding and showing improvements made to the Betta through selective breeding. While we describe the shows as a BEAUTY CONTEST for Bettas, the shows are meant to be an outlet for breeders to come together and collaborate with each other on their experiences and share with other members what they have done through their own respective breeding programs. [...] The job of all judges is to judge the fish as it appears against the standard at the time of judging without speculation as to its genetics, etc. As a possible better solution to publishing and distributing this DVD, might we suggest that you write an article explaining the process of how it is done and give tips on how the fish may appear if it were altered in this way for publication in FLARE! as well as your website. As an apprentice Judge you must realize that while we can suspect that the fish in front of us has been altered, there is no way to be certain. We must give each fish the same consideration against all fish in the class for its standard. With this in mind, it seems that the better stance to take in this situation is to stand up and say we do not condone or approve of this practice and we will not teach people how it is done.
