If you want that is able to hold more media i think you could use OHF better if your tank bracing is strong enough, as it can add more tray if you need the media is unable to handle the bio load,...

Currently I putting a tigirius and lapardei inside, the out put current may be abit strong for some fish so I put the sponge filter and plug into the j bar output.

Best Would be using 1 each for a tank so maintaining each tank water parameters would be easier.
Recommend canister i would say eheim classic model.
for my 2ft tank i'm using eheim 2217 previously...
