For side view:
1.Tail angle 45 degrees is best. Otherwise up to 90 degrees is acceptable.
2.Back curve must be smooth. Not especially bumpy still acceptable.
3.Thick,even head growth is best. But not until vision is impaired(which is desirable only in Thai black ranchus). Moderate head growth is also acceptable.
4.Anal fins paired is best, but single anal fin is not a fault. Must be symmetrical(paired) or central(single). Best if not bent when seen from side.
5.Scales must be lined evenly and not too big. Best if scaling resembles that of a snake.
6.When swimming or when still, fish should not droop, but look stable. Drooping a little bit is still acceptable, but not droop until face is looking straight at the aquarium or pond floor.
7.3 pivot or 4 pivot tail are all acceptable, but must be balanced.
For top view:
1.Head must at least have squarish or rectangular shape, which means good head growth. Best is if fish has buffalo cheeks. Again make sure hood growth is even or symmetrical.
2.Space between eyes must be as wide as possible.
3.Back bone must be thick. Best if as thick as space between eyes.
4.Caudal peduncle must be thick. Best if as thick as back bone.
5.Oza,or scales around caudal peduncle must be many and evenly lined.
6.Overall scales of fish should be evenly lined and small, giving snake-like appearance.
7.Body must not be too short,at least about 2 times the length of the head should be ok.
8.Anal fin must not be seen when viewed from top. Other criteria on anal fins as for side views.
9.Back curve should be smooth if possible. But apparently not smooth is acceptable. Tail angle is as for side views.
10.Tail must open nicely. When swimming must close slightly to give graceful look. Tail should not appear too stiff or too flexible. 3 pivot or 4 pivot tail are all acceptable. For 4 pivot tail, make sure the split area not too wide.
11.Swimming must be powerful and seem effortless. This you will need to see lots of real examples to judge for yourself.
Wah,,,,brrrrr,,,, hin liao man!
