Bare bottom v.s Gravel..

I know, I know, topic has been discussed but I am wondering if I made abig mistake by going with a planted tank and discus. The discus are growing, not fast, but growing. The problem is the constant maintaince. Anyone think it is too late to remove gravel? I figure I keep plants in pot with gravel and thats it. Does anyone think there is a chance that it is too late because the damage is done..
