Lower image for me as the overall contrast is better than the upper pic. Also the focusing is sharp in the lower pic which brings out the true colour nature of these beautiful discus fishes.
Just my thoughts

Interesting.... seems more than 80% prefers the lower image.
Just to share, the top image is original, I edited the lower image using
Unsharp Mask" Filter twice (in Photoshop).
No other editing of colors or exposures were done.

Attached is another sample image from amiidae that I played with.

ok, let me give you my view and the background of the shot.

Those Discus in this particular tank were quite shy and hide at the far end of the tank corner when I was trying to take some shots. (so happened that they just did WC and added more water into the tank)

After a long wait, the owner decided to lure them out to the front and center of the tank by throwing some Tetra bits.

FYI, this shot was taken when the group was still not at the spot where I can get a good shot. so honestly, this is one of my bad photo where by I can't get the subject tech-sharp.

So overly shapen the image (via PS) will make the subject look unreal. To me, lower image looks unreal to me.

The actual image quality viewed on my screen is between the 2 images posted above but it gets a little soft after uploaded on to photobucket.

Definitely 2nd pic as the discus behind is sharper and the lighting is brighter....

Ben, my apologies for using U as guinea pig!
i understand the circumstance of the shot.
But I wanted to see how many people actually appreciate a real photo as to something ... As you said...looks unreal.
