Poor fella' but a really cool picture nonetheless. Could it have been an accident? Say perhaps an accidental swish of its tail when the Pleco was too close. They've got soft bellies afterall.

I've seen some LFS put something that looks like an air hose tube over the sting.

Those rubber tubes are usually put on from exporter prior to shipping to prevent the ray sting from poking thru the bags . And most ray keepers will not purposely put on the tubes as this will create infection on the tail in the long run .
