Bro, if your tank is newly setup, you need to cycle it before you can safely put in the fish. There are many write-up about this in the net. I believe this website also has it.

How is your filtration system and tank setup?

Sorry I dont mean to kepo but your answer wil help us gauge what went wrong that caused the guppies death.

Further to the above, the guppies that were caught at the fish farm could be those that arent of good health. I am assuming your son caught them at the specially created pond where you are supposed to pay some kind of entrance fee into it and then you are then given a small net and a small container to catch the guppies.
